Aquatic is a self-conducted project blending interactive dance performance and motion capture technology, developed collaboratively with performer Harumi Mumenthaler. The system translates the dancer’s movements into a dynamic soundscape, triggering and manipulating underwater-inspired sounds in real time.
The project’s core challenge was to design sounds in combination with a mapping system that seamlessly matched with the fluidity of the dance movements and the evocative nature of underwater environments. Through literature research in interactive dance and user testing, the system was refined to offer intuitive and responsive control.
The result is a body-controlled instrument that allows dancers to “play” water sounds through movement, offering an innovative way to explore the interplay between physical expression and sonic immersion. Aquatic invites audiences into a unique audiovisual world, where the boundaries between movement, sound and environment dissolve into a fluid, interactive experience.
